I honestly find this advertisement to be quite disturbing to look at. How could a girl honestly be comfortable being this sickly looking? I find anorexia and bulimia hard to understand.
How can Ralph Lauren honestly try and make young women think that this is what they are suppose to look like?
Honestly, this girl in the picture to the right looks like she has barely survived the holocaust. Personally, I don't find this woman the least bit attractive.
As a society we need to keep each other in check and better weed this kind of garbage out of the media so we don't hurt anymore girls.
I will leave this topic with some stunning round about numbers. About 75,000 new cases of anorexics/bulimia are recorded in the US every year. There are only 300 million people in the US. Approx. 150 million are women.
75,000/150 million women are diagnosed with an eating disorder every year. Unbelievable. Something has to change and it should start with the entire media.
When someone interprets a thought, a notion, an object, or an action they are trying to find meaning or the purpose. This is the most basic school of thought in terms of finding meaning in something.
There are two ways to interpret meaning.
Through...
1. Representational Word
or through...
2. Conceptual Word.
When meaning is representational, your are basically saying that you are applying real world logic into your personal interpretation. Such as the definition of a mountain range, continent, or country is defined as.
Now when you are thinking of meaning in a conceptual way, what you are doing is simply analyzing notions such as truth or justice. Which both are purely speculative; both require a great deal of conceptual interpretation.
So when the meaning of something is really left up for conceptual interpretation the meaning can be perceived in many different ways by many different people. When something is purely interpreted by representation, it far easier to define than something with far more complexity.
Ideology is an expression of ones thoughts and vision on life as a whole. When someone takes a philosophical or political position, their personal ideology is the basis of that individuals thought process. I must ask, "Where does one get an ideology from in the first place?"
Ideology is not something you can be born with. It is an acquired intellectual stance on a various array of subjects set by a persons up bringing, environment, country, religion, and many other natural influences one may encounter in their lifetime.
I believe western culture as a whole, more specifically American culture has a stigma for having very distinct religious, political, and social ideologies. For instance, we believe freedom is a God given right. We the people, believe in a democratic process of choosing leadership. Most of us also believe it is a right to bear arms and to also choose to practice any type of religion without persecution. These are some of our most basic ideologies.
It is interesting to note that ideologies change over time just like anything else. Take for example our stance on social issues in this fine country. For the first time in our history, it is socially acceptable to be openly gay. Furthermore, as a society we have basically compartmentalized and have formed a comprehensive ideology. For the most part we are now all mostly open or accepting to woman's rights; particularly her right to abort a unborn child at her discretion. Before the past few decades, it was an disgrace to even murmur either one of the last two hot-button issues that were previously mentioned in this very paragraph.
Moreover, I believe ideologies are ever changing but some feel they are not changing fast enough. In our discussions in class we have explored very interesting scenarios that challenge ones morals and values. It is often very hard to find where to draw the line between right and wrong. I find that some people do feel very strongly about their ideologies. Most politicians for instance, take their personal ideologies or their constituencies' ideologies into great consideration when making policy or taking a stance on a tough issue. Either way, I would like to just see some common sense logic drive peoples ideals and decisions but I know that ideology will always stand in ones way. Either good or bad, it is something we must all live with.
The way I see it, there are two ways in the world that communication is delivered.
Way 1: 'The Transmission Model'
The 'Transmission Model' is best described as a linear delivery system. For example, lets say you are watching television show that reports and discusses the daily news of the world. You have the sender and the receiver. The sender (the talking head on TV) transmits a message out to you that you receive and process in your mind.
Now depending on what type of person you are, that message may or have may not been intended for you but either way it is still a transmission form of communication that is deliberately sent out into the world for those to receive who wish to do so. Either way this is an example of the transmission model, it happens every day a billion times per second.
Way 2: 'The Cultural Model'
Then you have the 'Cultural Model' which can also be described with the same general scenario. Now picture yourself watching that talking head but instead of the talking head being from, MSNBC or Fox News, lets just say, you are watching Al Jazeera being an American. You are experiencing cross-cultural communication via the transmission method. Now lets say you are a citizen of Saudi Arabia and you live in the Al Jezeera-Muslim world where the culture is much different than what we experience here in the US. The non-linear communication you experience on a day to day basis is cultural communication.
This form of communication is most often non-verbal and is a way of life in every culture on the face of this earth. The way in which you live your life is dictated by cultural standards that are shared by a group of people that sets the tone for the way you make mundane decisions and also in terms of the way things are established within the community.
